POS compatibility

Square: crypto payment compatibility

The verdict

Parallel acceptance Worth considering

Square has no built-in crypto acceptance. You can take crypto beside the register and record it in Square as an external payment, then reconcile by hand.

Parallel acceptance means the crypto payment runs beside the POS. The POS does not process or confirm the crypto payment. The sale must be recorded or reconciled separately.

How we know: Square's own Payments API documents its tender types (card, cash, bank account, buy-now-pay-later, Square account) and supported payment sources; cryptocurrency is not among them, and there is no documented way to add a crypto tender.

Who this is right for

A low-volume Square merchant, a boutique, a consultant, a service business, who has the occasional customer wanting to pay in crypto, is willing to record each crypto sale in Square by hand, and accepts that reconciliation is a manual, two-system job. Your existing Square setup does not change; the added work is per-transaction and small at low volume.

Who should probably skip it

A busy cafe, quick-service counter, or any high-volume Square merchant. Keying an external payment into Square at every crypto sale, then reconciling Square against a separate wallet or processor, adds friction with little payoff if only a few customers ever use crypto. If you expected Square itself to take and settle crypto, that is not what happens today.

What you gain and what you give up

You gain the ability to accept crypto without leaving Square for the rest of your business, using hardware you already own. You give up automatic handling: Square does not process or settle the crypto payment, the money never lands in your Square deposits, and you must record the sale yourself and reconcile it against the separate tool. Refund handling, reporting representation, and accounting export on the Square side are not yet verified (see below).

How crypto acceptance works with Square

Our evaluation

What we evaluate Rating Why Confidence
Checkout experience How smooth the paying moment is for the customer and the cashier. Not confirmed Separate-tool payment plus manual Square entry; speed and clarity not yet tested. Low
Fits your existing setup Whether it runs on hardware you already own. Good Uses your existing Square hardware; adds a separate crypto tool beside it. Low
Books and reporting Whether the sale lands in POS reports and exports cleanly to accounting. Poor Crypto proceeds never reach Square; two-system manual reconciliation; report representation unconfirmed. Low
Setup effort Time and technical difficulty to go live. Not confirmed Square side is minimal; overall effort depends on the separate crypto tool. Low
Cost level and clarity Both how high the all-in cost is and how transparent it is. Not confirmed Square may charge an Orders-API fee; crypto-tool costs unknown. Low
Reliability and support What happens during an outage, and how good help is when it breaks. Not confirmed Split support: Square records, the separate tool processes; failure modes untested. Low
Refund and adjustment handling Whether staff can refund a crypto sale cleanly, and how. Not confirmed Refund of an external crypto payment not verified; never inferred. Low

What we are still verifying

We publish what our documentation review supports and mark the rest as unverified. These questions are open. We will answer them with hands-on testing before we treat them as fact.

Can a cashier record a crypto sale as an external or other tender in the standard Square POS app, or does it require the API?

Why it matters: Determines whether parallel acceptance is realistically operable by a normal merchant, and underpins the whole verdict.

Current confidence: Low

Planned lab validation: Stand up a Square account and attempt to record a non-Square payment at the register; document every screen.

How does an external crypto payment appear in Square sales reports and deposits?

Why it matters: This is the core books-and-reporting question. Proceeds are not credited to Square, but report-line representation is unverified.

Current confidence: Low

Planned lab validation: Record a test external payment, then inspect the sales report, transactions list, and deposit report.

How is a refund handled for a crypto sale recorded as external?

Why it matters: Refunds on an effectively irreversible payment are a top merchant concern and must never be inferred.

Current confidence: Low

Planned lab validation: Attempt a refund on a recorded external payment in Square and document Square's behavior versus the separate tool.

What exactly is "Accept Bitcoin with Square"?

Why it matters: Square's own wording invites the belief that customers can pay in Bitcoin; the evidence points to seller revenue-conversion, but the mechanics, eligibility, fees, and custody are unconfirmed.

Current confidence: Low

Planned lab validation: Retrieve the full page and walk the feature in a live account to confirm what it does.

Does the crypto external record export cleanly to accounting (QuickBooks, Xero)?

Why it matters: Determines how painful reconciliation and year-end really are, and how it bridges to the CryptoLic Accounting Toolkit.

Current confidence: Low

Planned lab validation: Export and inspect whether the crypto external payment is distinguishable and reconcilable.

Can external payments be recorded offline, and how do Register, Terminal, Stand, and the mobile app behave?

Why it matters: Affects reliability and whether the flow works across real Square hardware.

Current confidence: Low

Planned lab validation: Test offline recording and repeat the flow on each hardware form factor.

CryptoLic Lab

CryptoLic does not stop at reading documentation. We independently validate what platforms and vendors claim by setting things up and running them ourselves, then we publish what we actually observed. For this platform, that hands-on validation is in progress. Nothing below is marked verified until we have tested it, so you can trust a "verified" label when you eventually see one.

Worried about the two-system bookkeeping?

Reconciling a crypto sale that never touched your Square deposits is exactly what the The Merchant Accounting & Bookkeeping Toolkit is built for: a parallel-flow routine and a clean year-end package for your CPA.

Recommended configuration by business type

If you areBest methodWhy
A low-volume boutique or service business on SquareParallel acceptance, recorded in Square as an external paymentNo change to your Square setup; the manual step is rare enough to stay manageable.
Testing crypto with minimal commitmentA separate wallet or QR beside the registerYou can start today without waiting on any Square feature; drop it just as easily.
A high-volume counter or quick-service businessWe recommend waitingManual entry and two-system reconciliation at rush are not worth it for a few crypto customers.
Staff will handle these sales?

Common problems and fixes

"Accept Bitcoin with Square" made me think customers can pay me in Bitcoin

Likely cause: That Square feature appears to be about converting your own sales into Bitcoin, not customers paying in crypto at checkout (mechanics not yet confirmed).
Fix: To take crypto from customers, use a separate wallet or processor and record the sale in Square as an external payment.
If that fails: Ask Square directly what the Bitcoin feature does for your account before relying on it.

My Square deposits do not include the crypto I took

Likely cause: Square records an external payment but the proceeds are never credited to your Square account; the money is in the separate tool.
Fix: Reconcile Square's recorded sales against the separate wallet or processor each day; treat them as two systems.
If that fails: Use the CryptoLic Accounting Toolkit's parallel-flow reconciliation if this becomes a burden.

Questions

Does Square let my customers pay me in cryptocurrency?

Not natively. Square's own payment tools do not include a crypto tender, and there is no documented way to add one. You can accept crypto through a separate wallet or processor beside the register and record the sale in Square as an external payment, but Square itself does not process or settle it.

Is "Accept Bitcoin with Square" the same as accepting crypto from customers?

It does not appear to be. The evidence points to a seller feature for turning your own sales revenue into Bitcoin, not customers paying in Bitcoin at checkout. We are still verifying exactly how it works, so we describe it cautiously rather than guess.

Do I need new hardware from Square?

No new Square hardware is needed to record an external payment. You will need whatever the separate crypto tool requires, which varies. We have not yet tested how recording behaves across Square Register, Terminal, Stand, and the mobile app.

Will the crypto sale show up in my Square reports?

An external payment can be recorded in Square, but the proceeds are not credited to your Square account, and we have not yet confirmed exactly how it is represented in reports and exports. Treat Square and your crypto tool as two systems to reconcile.

How this compares

Every platform we cover is rated the same way. Here is where the others land.

PlatformLevelThe short version
Clover Parallel acceptance Clover has no built-in crypto acceptance, but unlike some registers it has a Custom Tender system a crypto app could plug into. Whether a ready-to-use crypto app exists, and whether it reports and settles cleanly, is still unverified.
Toast Parallel acceptance Toast has no built-in crypto guest payment. A partner-tender path may exist but is unconfirmed, and how crypto behaves with restaurant basics like split checks and tips is entirely unverified, so most restaurants should wait.
Shopify POS Parallel acceptance Shopify supports crypto on its online checkout, but not at the in-person POS. At the register, crypto runs beside Shopify, and even recording it in Shopify POS is unverified.
