POS compatibility
Shopify POS: crypto payment compatibility
The verdict
Shopify supports crypto on its online checkout, but not at the in-person POS. At the register, crypto runs beside Shopify, and even recording it in Shopify POS is unverified.
Parallel acceptance means the crypto payment runs beside the POS. The POS does not process or confirm the crypto payment. The sale must be recorded or reconciled separately.

How we know: Shopify POS's own in-person payment options are enumerated (cash, cards, Shop Pay Installments, Interac, local payments, gift cards, Tap to Pay, store credit, subscriptions), and cryptocurrency is not among them. Shopify's documented crypto support is for its online checkout via payment apps, a separate product from the in-person POS.
Who this is right for
A low-volume Shopify POS merchant, especially one who also sells online. If you already take crypto on your Shopify online store, you can treat the occasional in-person crypto customer as a manual, beside-the-register exception and reconcile it by hand. Your existing Shopify POS setup does not change; the crypto part simply happens next to it, not through it.
Who should probably skip it
A merchant who expects the physical Shopify register to take crypto the way it takes cards, or who assumes the crypto app running on their online store also works at the counter. The evidence does not show that. High-volume in-person merchants especially should not build on an in-person crypto path that is not documented to exist.
What you gain and what you give up
You gain, potentially, the best online crypto story of any platform we cover: Shopify's checkout genuinely supports crypto through mature payment apps. You give up the assumption that this reaches the register. In person, the documented Shopify POS tenders do not include crypto, and even recording a beside-the-register crypto sale in Shopify POS is unverified. Until the lab confirms otherwise, in-person crypto on Shopify is a manual, reconcile-by-hand job.

Online crypto is not in-person crypto
Shopify is the one platform where you will find crypto clearly supported, and the one most likely to mislead you about it. The support is for your online checkout. Your physical register is a different product, and the evidence does not show crypto there.
What Shopify does support
Shopify's online checkout can take crypto through payment apps, and Shopify's own docs name cryptocurrency as a supported checkout payment method. If you sell online, this is real and usable today.
Where that support lives
Those payment apps are documented to integrate with Shopify checkout during the customer's purchase flow. The offsite type even redirects the shopper's browser to a hosted page. That is a web flow, not a countertop flow.
What Shopify POS actually lists
The in-person Shopify POS tenders are cash, cards, Shop Pay Installments, Interac, local payments, gift cards, Tap to Pay, store credit, and subscriptions. Crypto is not on that list, and we could not confirm a crypto app that works at the register.
What that means for you
If your question is "can my Shopify online store take crypto," the answer is yes. If it is "can my Shopify register take crypto in person," the answer today is: not natively, and not through a confirmed app. Plan for a beside-the-register flow.
Why Shopify is different
Square, Clover, and Toast are point-of-sale systems first. Shopify is an e-commerce platform that also sells a point-of-sale product, and it carries a mature app ecosystem, a marketplace, and a flexible payment-extension model that the others do not match. On paper, that is the richest foundation for crypto of any platform we cover.
The catch is where that richness applies. Shopify's payment extensions and crypto apps are documented for the online checkout, the flow a shopper goes through in a web browser. Shopify POS, the app running on a countertop device, is a different surface with its own, separate list of accepted tenders, and crypto is not on it.
So Shopify's flexibility is real, but it is concentrated online. For an in-person merchant, more developer flexibility and a bigger app store do not automatically mean a working register-side crypto option. That is the distinction this page keeps drawing, because it is the one most likely to cost a merchant time.
Capability, solution, and ecosystem are three different things
It helps to separate three ideas that are easy to blur. A platform capability is something the platform makes possible, like Shopify's payment-extension model. A merchant-ready solution is something you can turn on and use today, like a specific crypto app that works at your register. A third-party ecosystem is the marketplace of apps built on the capability.
Shopify clearly has the capability and the ecosystem. What we could not confirm is a merchant-ready in-person crypto solution: an app you can install that takes crypto at the Shopify POS counter and records it. The ecosystem being large does not prove that specific solution exists, and we will not assume it does.
This is the same lesson every platform in the Compatibility Center teaches, just in a sharper form here: the existence of an extension point, or an app store full of them, is not the same as a proven workflow at your register.
How crypto acceptance works with Shopify POS
- Parallel acceptance (non-integrated): A beside-the-register flow.
Our evaluation
What would it take to reach Level 4 (Official integration)?
Shopify POS sits at Level 2 (parallel acceptance) for in-person crypto. Here is exactly what would have to be true, and verified, for us to rate it higher. This is why compatibility levels exist: they track proven, in-person capability, not potential.
- A crypto payment app that actually runs inside Shopify POS in person, not just online checkout, would need to exist and be installable by a normal merchant (currently unconfirmed).
- That app's payment would need to be recognized by Shopify POS as a tender on the sale, so the crypto sale appears in Shopify reporting the way a card sale does (currently undocumented).
- Payment state would need to flow back into Shopify: the sale marked paid, reconcilable against the merchant's records (currently undocumented).
- Refunds would need a documented in-POS path, rather than a separate manual crypto send (currently undocumented; never inferred).
- Our lab would need to observe all of the above on real Shopify POS hardware before we would raise the level.
Until those are confirmed, Shopify POS stays Level 2 in person no matter how strong its online crypto tooling is. A capability that lives in the online checkout does not raise the in-person rating.

CryptoLic Lab
CryptoLic does not stop at reading documentation. We independently validate what platforms and vendors claim by setting things up and running them ourselves, then we publish what we actually observed. For this platform, that hands-on validation is in progress. Nothing below is marked verified until we have tested it, so you can trust a "verified" label when you eventually see one.

What we recommend by business type
Because Shopify's crypto strength is online, the in-person answer depends less on your business type than on whether you also sell online. Where the evidence does not let us distinguish types, we say so.
| If you run | Our stance | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid ecommerce + retail | Worth considering | You can take crypto online today and treat in-person as a manual, beside-register exception. |
| Online-first merchants | Worth considering (online) | Your crypto need is largely met at checkout; the in-person gap may not matter to you. |
| Retail, boutiques, coffee shops | Worth considering, in person only as parallel | Existing hardware is unchanged; crypto is a beside-register flow, reconciled by hand. |
| Pop-up and craft-fair merchants | Worth considering, with caveats | Shopify POS suits mobile selling, but in-person crypto is still a separate-tool flow; connectivity is an added unknown. |
| Food trucks and service businesses | Insufficient evidence to distinguish | No in-person crypto specifics were documented for these; treat as parallel acceptance until the lab tests it. |
| High-volume in-person merchants | We recommend waiting | There is no documented native or app-based in-person crypto path to rely on at volume. |

How this compares
Every platform we cover is rated the same way. Here is where the others land.
| Platform | Level | The short version |
|---|---|---|
| Square | Parallel acceptance | Square has no built-in crypto acceptance. You can take crypto beside the register and record it in Square as an external payment, then reconcile by hand. |
| Clover | Parallel acceptance | Clover has no built-in crypto acceptance, but unlike some registers it has a Custom Tender system a crypto app could plug into. Whether a ready-to-use crypto app exists, and whether it reports and settles cleanly, is still unverified. |
| Toast | Parallel acceptance | Toast has no built-in crypto guest payment. A partner-tender path may exist but is unconfirmed, and how crypto behaves with restaurant basics like split checks and tips is entirely unverified, so most restaurants should wait. |
