What this comparison shows, honestly
Today, all four platforms share the same headline: no native in-person crypto tender, and a Level 2 (parallel acceptance) reality where crypto runs beside the register. The differences are in the details and, mostly, in what remains unknown.
- Square has the clearest documentation of the in-person recording path, and it is the only one with a rated (not "unknown") books-and-reporting finding, though still documentation-only and rated Poor.
- Clover and Toast each document a partner/custom tender surface a crypto app could use, but no ready-to-use crypto app is confirmed, and reporting and settlement are unverified.
- Shopify POS has the strongest crypto story overall, but it lives on the online checkout, not the in-person register, so for POS it looks much like the others.
Where platforms are equally unknown
On refund confidence, reliability, and checkout experience, every platform is currently unknown: no vendor documents how a crypto refund or a crypto checkout actually behaves in person, and we will not infer it. On those rows, the four are genuinely tied, at "we do not know yet."
Counting only the rows we mark unknown: Clover (4), Shopify POS (4), Square (3), Toast (5). A higher count is not "worse", it reflects how much the vendor leaves undocumented and how much our lab still needs to confirm.
We have completed documentation review on all four platforms, but hands-on lab validation is still in progress. A finding stays "Documentation only" until we verify it ourselves, and "Unknown" until the evidence exists at all. Nothing here is marked "Verified" yet, because we have not finished testing, and we will not pretend otherwise. See the laboratory roadmap.
