The best POS for cryptocurrency
The honest version of a question thousands of merchants ask. There is no single "best POS for crypto" today, and this page explains exactly why, and what to look at instead.
The short answer
No point-of-sale system we have researched, Square, Clover, Toast, or Shopify POS, currently offers built-in cryptocurrency acceptance at the register. All four land at Level 2 (parallel acceptance): you can take crypto beside the register with a separate tool and record the sale, but the register itself is not processing it. So there is no clear winner to crown, and we will not manufacture one.
That is not a dodge. It is the finding. A ranking would imply differences the evidence does not yet support, and most of the meaningful differences between these platforms are currently unknown, pending our lab testing.
What actually matters (the characteristics to weigh)
- How crypto is taken: built into the register (none today), through an official/partner integration (documented on some, unverified), or beside the register (available everywhere).
- Whether the sale reaches your books: does the crypto sale appear in the platform's reports and reconcile cleanly? Mostly unknown today.
- Refunds: can staff refund a crypto sale in the system, or is it a separate manual send? Unverified everywhere.
- Your existing setup: can you use the hardware you already own? Generally yes, since parallel acceptance adds a separate tool.
- Your business shape: a counter coffee shop and a full-service restaurant face very different crypto workflows (splits, tips, servers).
Why no platform earns a perfect recommendation
Two reasons, both honest. First, none offers native in-person crypto, so the deepest, cleanest kind of support simply does not exist on these platforms yet. Second, the operational details that would separate them, reporting, settlement, refunds, are largely unverified. We have read the documentation; we have not finished testing the reality. Recommending a "best" on that basis would be exactly the kind of confident guessing this site exists to avoid.
Why Compatibility Levels differ (and why they are all Level 2 right now)
The level reflects the deepest method we can substantiate with evidence, not the most ambitious one a vendor markets. Clover and Toast document partner-tender surfaces that could reach a higher level, but until a real crypto app is confirmed to exist and to report and settle, we cannot assign it. Shopify's higher-level crypto support is real but lives online, not at the POS. So all four sit at Level 2 for the in-person question, for different underlying reasons.
Why documentation quality differs
Shopify has the most complete, openly readable documentation of the four; Square's is close behind and, for the in-person recording path specifically, the clearest. Toast's was the most locked-down. Better documentation does not mean better crypto support, it means we could answer more questions from the desk. The gaps that remain are where our lab comes in.
Why lab validation matters here most of all
The difference between "the vendor's docs suggest this works" and "we ran a crypto refund on this device and watched what happened" is the entire value of this section. Does any POS have crypto built in?
