Payment solution

CoinCorner: crypto payment solution

The verdict

CoinCorner Checkout is a finished custodial Bitcoin and Lightning gateway with instant GBP/EUR conversion, but US merchants cannot use it, so for our audience it is not a usable option today.

Best for: Supported-territory (UK, Isle of Man, and select European) merchants wanting a low-effort Bitcoin gateway that settles to GBP or EUR.

Poor fit: US merchants (unsupported), and anyone wanting self-custody or non-Bitcoin assets.

Biggest tradeoff: For supported-territory merchants it is a genuine, finished product (hosted invoices, plugins, POS apps, 1% fee, instant fiat conversion). The tradeoffs are full custody, total provider dependence, and Bitcoin-only. For US merchants it is simply unavailable.

What it is

CoinCorner Checkout is a custodial, Bitcoin-only (Lightning-default plus on-chain) hosted payment gateway from CoinCorner, a UK and Isle of Man exchange. It offers hosted invoices, payment buttons, ecommerce plugins, iOS and Android POS apps, and a REST API, with instant conversion to GBP or EUR.

What it is not

It is not available to US merchants: the United States is not among its roughly 16 supported territories, and there is no USD settlement. It is not self-custody, and it is not multi-asset (Bitcoin only).

How the payment flow works

A supported-territory business signs up, completes verification, and takes Bitcoin on-chain or over Lightning through hosted invoices, a plugin, or a POS app. CoinCorner can instantly convert to GBP or EUR and settle to the merchant, holding funds until settlement.

Custody, keys, and settlement

The most important thing about any crypto payment solution is who controls the money and what happens if the provider goes away. Here is the structured answer, from primary sources.

Conversion: CoinCorner Checkout can instantly convert Bitcoin to GBP or EUR. There is no USD settlement, and the United States is not among its ~16 supported territories.

Getting your money: Funds are held by CoinCorner and settled per your BTC/GBP/EUR configuration. Access depends on the CoinCorner platform and account standing.

If the provider or hosted service becomes unavailable

Withdrawing funds depends on provider access.

CoinCorner is custodial, so access to funds depends on the platform and account standing. No independent-recovery mechanism is documented; this is standard custodial-gateway exposure.

What you have to operate

Very little: an account, a hosted checkout, plugin, or POS app, and your reconciliation. There is no server or node to run.

Ongoing maintenance: Light: manage the dashboard, reconcile, keep any plugin updated.

Support: Not confirmed; merchant support tier not documented in retrieved sources.

Who this is right for

A merchant in a supported territory (UK, Isle of Man, and select European countries) who wants a low-effort Bitcoin gateway that settles to pounds or euros, and who is comfortable with a custodial provider.

Who should skip it

US merchants (unsupported), merchants who want self-custody, and anyone needing stablecoins or assets beyond Bitcoin.

Our evaluation

Money and control

Who holds your money and keys, whether you get dollars, and what happens if the provider goes away.

What we evaluate Rating Why Confidence
Custody model Who holds your money between the sale and settlement, you or a third party. Fair Fully custodial: CoinCorner holds funds until settlement; keys are never the merchant's. Medium
Settlement Whether you get dollars, crypto, or a choice, and when. Good Instant conversion to GBP or EUR with bank settlement, but no USD and supported territories only. Medium
Fiat support Whether you can price and settle in dollars cleanly. Fair GBP and EUR settlement is documented; there is no USD settlement for US merchants. Medium
Refunds Whether you can refund a payment, and how. Never inferred from an API. Good Free refunds are documented for the checkout product. Medium
Security model What you are trusting and what your exposure is: keys, custody, attack surface. Fair Custodial exchange model; specific merchant account-security controls were not documented. Low

Operations

What running this actually takes day to day, and whether it produces records your books can use.

What we evaluate Rating Why Confidence
Hosting requirements Whether you have to run a server or a node. The biggest burden divider. Excellent Fully hosted; nothing for the merchant to run. High
Ease of setup Honest effort to go live, not marketing easy. Good Hosted checkout, plugins, and POS apps; KYB adds steps, and only supported territories can onboard. Medium
Accounting and records Whether it produces records your books and CPA can use. Not confirmed Reporting and accounting exports were not documented in retrieved sources. Low
Employee workflow What your staff actually have to do, and whether multiple users are supported. Not confirmed Multi-user and staff roles were not documented. Low
Merchant support Who helps when it breaks, and how good that help is. Not confirmed No merchant support tier or SLA was documented. Low
Offline capability Whether it works when the internet or a node is down. Not confirmed iOS and Android POS apps exist, but offline behavior was not documented. Low

Technical capability

What the solution can actually do: Lightning, on-chain, stablecoins, and how extensible it is.

What we evaluate Rating Why Confidence
Lightning support Whether you can take Lightning, and what that requires operationally. Good Lightning is the checkout default, from a company known for Lightning products. Medium
On-chain support Whether you can take on-chain, with what confirmation and fee reality. Good On-chain Bitcoin is supported alongside Lightning. Medium
Open source Whether you can inspect and self-host it, and whether it is actively maintained. Poor A proprietary custodial platform; not open-source. Medium
Operational maturity Whether this is a stable product or an early project. Good An established UK/Isle of Man exchange and merchant-services operator. Medium
Developer ecosystem Whether you can extend it if you need to. Mostly for infrastructure and API-first tools. Fair A REST API and ecommerce plugins exist, but the API docs page did not load during research. Low

Cost, clarity, and privacy

What it really costs all in, how clearly that is disclosed, and what using it reveals.

What we evaluate Rating Why Confidence
Fees What it really costs, all in, and how transparent that cost is. Good A clear 1% checkout fee, though fiat-conversion fee stacking was not fully reconciled. Medium
Documentation quality Whether a merchant can actually learn to run this. Fair Merchant pages are usable, but the API docs (500) and merchant register (403) did not load. Low
Privacy What using this reveals, and to whom: address reuse, KYC, on-chain linkage. Fair KYB is required and the model is custodial; no privacy-preserving option was documented. Low

We rate each area on its own. There is no overall score, because averaging areas this different, a self-hosted server's independence against a gateway's convenience, would hide the tradeoff you need to see. How we rate.

A 1% checkout fee is documented. Whether GBP/EUR auto-conversion adds a separate trading fee or a per-transaction eMoney charge on top was not reconciled from a single source; confirm the all-in cost with CoinCorner. Last verified 2026-07-11.

Limitations

  • Not available to US merchants; no USD settlement.
  • Custodial: CoinCorner holds funds until settlement.
  • Bitcoin-only; no stablecoins or other assets.
  • Effective all-in cost is unverified beyond the 1% checkout fee (possible conversion or eMoney charges).
  • Reporting, accounting exports, and merchant support tier were not documented.

What we are still verifying

We publish what our documentation review supports and mark the rest as unverified. These questions are open. We will answer them with hands-on testing before we treat them as fact.

What is the true all-in cost per fiat-settled sale?

Why it matters: The 1% checkout fee is clear, but conversion and eMoney charges may stack and were not reconciled.

Planned lab validation: Run a fiat-settled sale and record every fee applied.

Does the supported-country list match the marketing '35+/40+ countries' claim?

Why it matters: The account-support list shows ~16 territories, far fewer than marketing; the gap likely covers card sales or remittance, not merchant accounts.

Planned lab validation: Confirm merchant-account eligibility per territory with CoinCorner.

What reporting and accounting exports exist?

Why it matters: None were documented; determines the bookkeeping burden.

Planned lab validation: Inspect a live merchant dashboard for exports and reports.

CryptoLic Lab

CryptoLic does not stop at reading documentation. We independently validate what vendors claim by setting things up and running them ourselves, then we publish what we actually observed. For this solution, that hands-on validation is not scheduled. Nothing below is marked verified until we have tested it, so you can trust a "verified" label when you eventually see one.

Questions

Can a US business use CoinCorner?

Not per the documentation. The United States is not among CoinCorner's roughly 16 supported territories, and there is no USD settlement. For US merchants it is not a usable option, which is why we do not recommend it for our audience.

Who holds the funds with CoinCorner?

CoinCorner does, until settlement. It is a custodial gateway from a UK and Isle of Man exchange: it receives the Bitcoin, can convert instantly to GBP or EUR, and settles to you, holding funds in between.

What does CoinCorner Checkout cost?

The documented checkout fee is 1%. We could not fully reconcile whether GBP/EUR auto-conversion adds a separate trading fee or a per-transaction charge, so confirm the all-in cost with CoinCorner before relying on it.

How this compares

Every solution we cover is evaluated the same way. Here is where the others land.

SolutionCategoryReadinessThe short version
OpenNode Custodial gateway R4 Merchant-ready OpenNode is a finished, hosted Bitcoin and Lightning gateway that can auto-convert to dollars and settle to a US bank, in exchange for the provider holding your funds and gating bank payout behind approval.
Coinbase Business Custodial gateway R4 Merchant-ready Coinbase Business is a custodial USDC payments platform for online businesses, and the migration home for Coinbase Commerce, but its fee is unconfirmed, it is US and Singapore only, and it is not for in-person retail.
BTCPay Server Self-hosted acceptance platform R3 Workable with effort BTCPay Server is the reference self-custody answer: free, open-source software that takes Bitcoin and Lightning straight to your own wallet, in exchange for running and maintaining a server.
