Short answer
They are the same money at different speeds. On-chain Bitcoin settles like a bank wire, secure and final but slower and costlier for tiny amounts. The Lightning Network is a fast layer built on top of Bitcoin that clears small payments in seconds for a fraction of a cent. Lightning is not a different coin.
Which one you use
- On-chain: large or infrequent payments, like a contractor invoice.
- Lightning: small, frequent payments, like a coffee or a market sale.
Most payment tools support both and pick the right one automatically, so this is rarely a per-sale decision.
